Deputy Harbour Master Vacancy

Following a successful selection process our current Deputy will be starting a new job at Harwich Haven Authority.

You must be a 'people person'; managing a team engaging with Mooring holders, visitors ,commercial organisations, public bodies and members of the general public.

It is a small mixed leisure and commercial port with a rich heritage and is within a nature conservation area of international importance. The harbour comprises a commercial wharf, a marina and several boatyards and provides a total of about 500 berths and moorings. Vessels handled include cargo vessels up to 100m, Charter fishing vessels, wind farm support vessels to the adjacent Gunfleet Sands and approximately 2500 visiting recreational craft per year.

Essential:-

A thorough knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the PMSC (and supporting Guide to Good Practice) marine risk assessment techniques and relevant ports and marine legislation.

Health and Safety Qualification or equivalent ideally to L3.

To hold any of the following; STCW II/1 or RYA Advanced Power Boat or Yachtmaster with commercial endorsement or an alternative equivalent marine qualification.

Driving Licence

Significant knowledge and demonstrable understanding of:

Safety Management Systems

Oil spill response to Level 4P

Implementing Policy

Pilotage Operations

Incident Investigation and Risk Management

Desirable:-

Instructional techniques

Environmental awareness

Incident investigation

Budget management

The appointment is full time (2080 hours) and will include some weekends and unsocial hours. Starting salary will circa £32000.

Ideally you will have experience working within a commercial or leisure Harbour, however this is not essential.

Incremental / Seasonal staff

The Harbour is manned throughout the year, although there is a regular cadre of staff many of the jobs require additional manpower.

In the Winter maintenance is the primary concern, operatives are required for:

  1. Marina Dredging
  2. Pontoon Jet washing
  3. Painting
  4. Planking Repairs
  5. Grounds Maintenance

In the Summer Marine operational staff are required for:

  1. Taxi Coxswains Days and evening
  2. Ferry Coxswains Point Clear, E Mersea and B’sea service
  3. Charter Ferry Coxswains to Colchester, Rowhedge and Wivenhoe
  4. Duty Harbour Master assistant

You must be qualified to at least RYA level 2 Powerboat, must be over 18 and ideally hold a First aid certificate.

Training will be given, first training event is 23rd March 2019.
